I think that Obama has outsmarted everyone - left and right - by playing it perfectly. Brian is spot-on in terms of the GOP hanging themselves long term by being so myopic. The liberals shoot themselves in the foot (see 2000 election) and they need to appreciate that the system is such a gridlock that Obama getting this thing passed is a monumental achievement that will start the process of proving sweeping legislation can get passed into law.

You could go back to McCain's campaign and look at his speeches: He had nothing to offer most Americans. He ran on "love of country" and making the Bush tax cuts (primarily for the wealthy) permanent. At least Bush had "compassionate conservatism" and "no child left behind."

Be glad that they're not smooth talkers like Snowe and Collins, though. They manage to get reelected by wide margins somehow. If the Republicans hadn't chased Specter out of the party, this wouldn't have passed; he's another smooth talker who would have towed the party line.
