Latest on Fort Hood

The suspect isn't dead. He is alive, in custody, and only wounded.

I say they turn him loose on base and tell all the cops to take the rest of the night off. There's probably a few guys that would like a word with him.

I'm just waiting for the wingnuts to tell me how Obama is responsible for this

Wow, I have a brother who was stationed at Ft. Hood and raised a family in Kileen. There is a history of incidents similar to this there but obviously not to this extent. I am not claiming any insight to what happened here, but it kind of seemed like the largest facility you could be stationed to as a regular soldier within the continental United States that was the furthest from any civilian life.

The dude was a MAJOR, an MD, and been in the military since before 9/11. Listen to the interview with his cousin, this is pretty crazy. He's an American who gave the impression he did all this just because he was tired of being surrounded by people who hated Muslims so much. Gee, I wonder if the savages in Pakterrorstan can identify with him? I'm not sure I believe the Army on the single shooter thing, but it's probably true. Don't worry though, the Army spokesman said he didn't use any military weapons. I feel much more comfortable knowing he killed that many soldiers using shit he bought in a local gunstore.

All that said, isn't shooting a bunch of random soldiers the same as bombing them or hitting them with drone aircraft? Isn't this the game we like to play? Since when has the Army been training shrinks in asymmetrical warfare?

Oh, I forgot... Only Afghanis and Pakistanis think like that. FTA

The only difference is that the savages in Pakiterroristan are surrounded by like minded people who hate Americans and agree with and support their actions.

Additionally, comparing this guy to our drone attacks is also faulty. To buy this comparison you'd have to believe we are launching hellfire missiles, which incite additional violence against our forces in the region, indiscriminately, instead of at suspected terrorist hideouts.

Every time Obama launches a drone attack, he is weighing the American lives that will likely be lost in an insurgent/terrorist retaliation, vs. the American lives that would be lost if this terrorist isn't killed.

I think the group that is hurt most by this is Muslims, because now it seems they're crazy all over the world. This is the first real instance of an American Muslim going jihad on a bunch of people. If it can happen to a 39 year old American soldier who is also a doctor, then the illiterate 15 year old in severe poverty in Pakistan has no chance.

No, there are some other differences. One, he lived in the US, those other guys live on the opposite side of the planet. I think that might make him a bit more effective as a Jihadist. What's it matter if he had friends next door that agreed with him?

Drone strikes are directly comparable to his attack. He could have shot up schoolchildren, but he decided to take his fight directly to our Armed Forces. If there was a Pakistani who decided to go on a shooting spree of AQ fighters in his country while yelling "Freedom and Democracy!" wouldn't we consider him a hero? I would. We complain that they target civilians and use "cowardly" suicide bombers, well this dude had on Islamic dress and shot up our largest military base Rambo style.

I'm not trying to glorify him, my point is this dude represents the real terrorist threat. He may have made the calculation that this attack would hurt our war effort since it would politically portray the fight as between the US and muslims. He probably didn't, but that's its effect. It doesn't matter if he didn't exchange emails with Osama bin Laden beforehand.

So why are we engaged in a war of occupation in a narco-state on the other side of the planet? Do we just want to push more fundamentalists into Pakistan? That's what we're doing in addition to stirring up shit like this.
