Morning Whiskey - 04/06/2009 - Day 77

[OBAMA IN TURKEY] - Bloomberg - Obama is in Turkey today on the final leg of his trip overseas. Obama praised Ataturk for putting Turkey on the path to Democracy. Obama is trying to boost ties with Turkey, a Muslim nation, so we can use Turkish soil to leave Iraq. The Turks have issues with the Armenians, as well as the Kurds in Iraq.

[EARTHQUAKE] - NYTs - A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit Italy today about 100 miles east of Rome, and over 50 people have died, with thousands left homeless.
[TOXIC ASSETS] - Financial Times - Under the government plan, bailed out banks are going to buy the toxic assets of other bailed out banks, and they'll probably make huge profits. But there is something disturbing when banks we've already given money because of 'toxic' debt use that money to buy other 'toxic' debt.
[OVER A DOG] - CNN - The 3 officers in Pittsburgh shot the other day were called to the house over a dog that pisses in the house.
[SUICIDE PAKISTAN] - NYTs - 3 suicide bombs kill 26 in Pakistan yesterday. The Pakistani Taliban(sunni) are ramping up bombings of Shiite mosques.
[PAKISTANI ALLY] - NYTs - Pakistan is welcoming our money, but they aren't prepared to give up their war on India and fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda which are actively killing their civilians. Pakistan is freaked out about India, and seems to have a real complex about them, rightly or wrongly given the history of war. How many suicide bombs does it take for a Muslim nation to admit it has a problem? Many in the military tasked with fighting the militants are sympathetic to them, and would prefer accomodating them.
[RAPE LAW] - CNN - Afghanistan is going to 'review' the rape legalization law under pressure from the west. Obama has called the law 'abhorrent'.
[BIG PICTURE] - Boston Big Picture - Afghanistan
[EUROPE LOVES MICHELLE] - Politico - While President Obama has done well on his overseas trip to Europe, it seems Michelle is a bigger hit

[AT&T STRIKE] - AP - AT&T is one step away from a major strike as its contract with the 90k strong union has expired
[ANTARTIC ICE BRIDGE] - BBC - A huge ice shelf, the size of Jamaica, has broken away. This will lead to more penguin habitat being lost in Antartica.
[VITAMINS] - NYTs - Seeking to stay healthier and avoid doctor's bills, people are buying vitamins
[BRADY WEDDING] - BH - Gunfire at Tom Brady's wedding
[END OF THE DEPRESSION] - Jim Cramer says we are out of the depression

MTP was one of the better episodes lately. I was irrate when the new GM executive said he had to take a 30% paycut so his salary is now 1.3 million. Seriously, that is way too much. Yes, he is running a big corporation but that salary is outrageous for a company that could be in bankruptcy in 60 days.

Maybe the EU isn't keen on Turkey joining since it is basically the worst offender in terms of human rights in the entire world. The United States is willing to overlook this fact since they have military bases and missiles there, but the fact the United States is so firmly behind Turkey and willing to ignore their attempts to ethnically cleanse Turkey as well as the middle east is what is really abhorrent here
