Morning Whiskey - 11/17/2008 - 64 Days Left

NOTE: Don't miss the 60 Minutes video of Obama I posted last night...

[VETTING BILL]
- NYTs - Showing that the talk of Hillary as Secretary of State is serious, the Obama team is vetting Bill Clinton's finances and business dealings. As the report says....Hillary wouldn't put herself through this if Obama wasn't serious or if she wasn't interested.
[NO CONCESSIONS] - The UAW rules out any concessions whatsoever to help Detroit. So why should we the tax payers help them?
[BAD WEEK AHEAD] - With results coming from Home Depot and with Congress debating the future of the auto industry, it is expected to be a bad week on Wall Street
[HOW LOW CAN THEY GO?] - Politico - How bad is it for the Republican party? It seems all they're banking on right now is an Obama failure....but they don't have the seats in Congress to make that happen.
[JAPAN] - The Japanese economy is in recession
[TEAM OF RIVALS] - WSJ - Obama and McCain will meet today. Does McCain want to be inside the working majority or outside casting stones? Since he isn't going to run for president again, and said so on Leno last week, I'm going he is more upset with the Republican party and how they dragged down his brand than he is with Obama.
[OPEC WOES] - Some good news here with regard to oil prices. Oil continues to fall even though the oil dictators in OPEC keep cutting output.
[RUDY] - Rudy Guiliani may run for New York governor
[HEALTHCARE] - NYTs - Is this Rahm Emanuel's brother? I think it is. They say in the family that he will be the most important brother because of his medical research. He does a 5 section outline of why Obama should 'think big' on healthcare.
[BALLSY] - Before the election, Obama sent letters to several federal employees explaining what he was going to do for each agency in great detail. Where does the money come from?
[BAILOUT ROADBLOCK] - Fox News - The Republicans in the White House and Congress are ready to stop any bailout to Detroit....why? Michigan votes Democratic.
[FAT NATION] - Fox News - Nation's fattest city doesn't care about said distinction.....There should be an obesity tax in healthcare, just like there should be a smoking tax, or a drinking tax. I shouldn't pay more for healthcare because you smoke or eat too much and can't take the stairs or walk more than 30 feet.
[NO EMAIL?] - NYTs - Because PEBO's records have to be kept and can be looked at, Obama will most likely give up email. Kind of hypocritical to make fun of McCain's ineptness with regard to computers and email when you won't use them in the White House because you're afraid people will read your conversations. Hopefully Obama doesn't go this route.
[OUT OF THE WILDERNESS] - NYTs - The Republican party argues about the way back to prominence...I don't think there is one unless Obama is wholly incompetent.
[WORLD LEADERS AGREE]

Re Obesity tax - thats the camel's nose under the tent. We don't know much about the mysteries of the human body and disease. Did you see that NY Times story about the leukemia breakthrough? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/06/health/research/06cancer.html?hp

". . . 8 of the 10 mutations . . . found . . . had never been linked to the disease before."

First things first: lift the stem cell ban and let research bloom. Geniuses are at work in the health fields, all over the world. I have a lot of hope.

Getting stuck on "obesity" is kind of right wing thinking, IMO. Sorry, Brian.

Obesity is all about personal responsibility in most cases. Sure, some people have clinical problems, but is it under 10%?

The body is just like a business. More energy(money) goes out(spent) and the weight(value) drops. More energy comes in and the weight goes up. It really is that simple.

There is a big difference between someone who refuses to stop harming themselves, people who eat too much and don't exercise and those who smoke, and people who can't help it and have real medical conditions they can't cure by simple lifestyle changes.

It isn't 'right' thinking. It is common fucking sense. I shouldn't have to pay more because someone feeds their kids McDonalds in place of a real meal.

You are conflating two arguments. Obviously, science has been hamstrung over the last 20 years even because of special interests and religious nuts. But that doesn't excuse obesity by choice, which leads to the most damning statistic about healthcare: 80% of our costs are caused by 20% of our cases.

If universal insurance is a basic human right, and I believe it is, that also means that people have to take care of their bodies...i.e...everyone pitches in to lower costs and ensure the collective gets the best healthcare possible. When we are all in this together, and we are now because our copays cover an obese person's or smoker's healthcare usage, it means that people don't have license to ruin their bodies and expect others to subsidize them. But because obese people suck up more healthcare, dramatically so, they should pay a higher premium. I'll call this idea the BMI tax.

Former drug users and alcoholics too. If you willfully ruin your body, you pay more for healthcare.

Although I do feel that Hillary has much to prove, I truly believe that positive thought can transform this country! While it may be easy to dwell on the past, or negative aspects of Hillary, we can only look to the future and all that it holds in store for us. I've been using this concept in my personal life as well. Positive thought combined with the use of vision boards has truly helped me be more open to opportunity- just as Hillary was! Here's a great resource explaining (better than I can) how to use these concepts to better your life: www.thevisionboardkit.com. You can download a free first chapter, too!

I laughed at one of the commentators on MTP yesterday that pointed out how "unusual" it was for the UAW to hold a press conference saying "look, we've given up enough..." It made them look more guilty, if you ask me.

If I really had no personal connection to this region, I'd be apt to let Detroit fail miserably, just to kill the UAW.

Re: science funding and stem cell ban

PLEASE!!! My career depends on it and things have been DIRE for the last 6-8 years. Lifting the stem cell ban, while GREAT, is only the beginning. Science has been wholly ignored during the Bush years. It's time for a resurgence.
